Looking at recently released figures it seems that in general in Western countries the academic qualities in general are in decline.
It seems that more students are leaving their education ill prepared, and worse still show little skills of academia in their chosen professions. Spelling and math are at an all time low for most Western societies.
1961 put me in my first school.I can still recall all the children singing together, A B C D E F G……. collectively in class. Then I suppose it was ramming it into our skulls…. a technique that is generally frowned upon these days.
A E I O U…… we learned the vowels and never forgot ………. I before E except after C and It was compulsory to start the day with your twelve times tables.
For those of you not familiar with them, it goes like 2 x 2 = 4, 2 x 3 = 6, and on till 12, then begin again using 3 x 3 = 9, 3 x 4 = 12……… You will eventually get to 12 x 12 = 144…………
The liberal teachers of the 90’s it seems deemed these were not now necessary, as more general applications were fairer to all students and did not promote competitive conditions among students.
Today we are paying for it………. we are being overtaken by Asia, with their marks of academia being so much higher than the rest of the world in skills in general, but most in basic skills for all children…………
Just guess what they do in these schools that we don’t do in ours?? they start the day with their twelve times tables…… go figure…..
